Step 1: Preparing the Ground
- Clear the Area
- Remove all existing grass, weeds, and debris from the area where you plan to lay your turf. Use a spade, or turf cutter or rotavator for larger areas.
- Improve Soil Quality
- Test the soil pH and adjust if necessary (ideal pH is between 6.0 and 7.5). Add soil conditioners or compost to improve soil structure and fertility.
- Level the Ground
- Rake the soil to create a level, smooth surface. Ensure there are no dips or hollows that could cause water pooling. Use a roller or your feet to firm the soil lightly.
- Apply Fertiliser
- Spread a pre-turfing fertiliser evenly over the soil to promote healthy root growth. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for application rates.
Step 2: Laying the Turf
- Plan Your Layout
- Start laying turf along a straight edge, such as a path or fence line. Lay subsequent rows in a brickwork pattern, staggering the joints like a brick wall.
- Lay the Turf
- Unroll the first piece of turf and gently press it into place. Avoid stretching the turf. Continue laying the turf, ensuring each piece is tightly butted against the previous one without overlapping.
- Trim and Fit
- Use a sharp knife to trim the edges of the turf to fit around curves, borders, and obstacles. Ensure all pieces fit snugly together.
- Compact the Turf
- After laying the turf, lightly press it down with a roller or by walking on it with a piece of plywood to ensure good contact between the turf and the soil.
Step 3: Watering and Initial Care
- Water Thoroughly
- Immediately after laying, water the turf thoroughly until the soil beneath is moist. This helps the turf settle and encourages root growth.
- Keep Moist
- For the first few weeks, keep the turf well-watered. The soil should be consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water early in the morning or late in the evening to minimise evaporation.
- Avoid Heavy Use
- Stay off the newly laid turf as much as possible during the establishment period (about 2-3 weeks). This allows the roots to penetrate the soil without being disturbed.
Step 4: Ongoing Maintenance
- Mowing
- Once the turf is established and growing well (usually after 2-3 weeks), start mowing. Make sure your mower blade is sharp, and avoid cutting more than one-third of the grass height at a time. Aim for a grass height of around 2.5-3 cm (1-1.5 inches).
- Fertilising
- Apply a balanced lawn fertilizer 4-6 weeks after installation to promote healthy growth. Follow a regular fertilisation schedule as recommended for your turf type.
- Weed Control
- Keep an eye out for weeds and remove them promptly. Consider using a selective herbicide suitable for turf if weeds become a problem.
- Aeration and Scarification
- Aerate your lawn once a year to relieve soil compaction and improve water and nutrient penetration. Scarify (rake) to remove thatch build-up and promote healthy growth.
Tips for Success
- Edge the Turf: Use an edging tool to create clean, defined borders for your lawn.
- Monitor Watering: Adjust your watering schedule based on weather conditions and soil moisture levels.
- Protect Against Pests: Keep an eye out for pests like grubs and treat them promptly to avoid damage to your lawn.
